Spring 1
As Scientists, can we find out how we use different materials in everyday life?
Science (Focus topic)
In science we looked at how we use materials in everyday life. The children learnt about materials such as glass, wood, metal, plastic, metal and rubber. We conducted an experiment to test different materials properties and find out which materials were transparent, opaque, hard, soft, heavy, light, stretchy, strong, fragile, waterproof and absorbent. We then looked at which materials would be best for building a house for the three little pigs!
Geography
In Geography we learnt all about the UK. The children learnt to recognise the UK on a map and name the four countries inside the UK. The children were introduced to the different flags and capital cities. We explored famous landmarks in each country and whether they were a human or a physical feature.
English
We learnt how to write instructions on washing a woolly mammoth and the children were introduced to bossy verbs for the first time. Afterwards we wrote a narrative on the famous story of Elmer and the children were introduced to verbs ending with the suffix ‘ed’ and prepositions! The children were also reminded of capital letters, full stops, adjectives, verbs, nouns and the personal pronoun ‘I’. In spelling, we continued to focus on Year 1 National Curriculum words.
Maths
This half term we focused on understanding all numbers up to 20 and the relationship they share. We looked at 1 more, 1 less and we compared numbers as well! We also looked at addition and subtraction within 20 as well as related number facts. For example, if 2+3 = 5 then 2+13=15. We then moved on to doubles up to 20 and we looked at how we can use this knowledge to work out near doubles to help with addition and subtraction problems.
P.E
In P.E the children covered ‘fitness’ and ‘dance’. In fitness the children looked at strengthening their understanding of the importance of exercise, getting their heart rate up and they explored different ways to stay fit. In dance, they looked at exploring movement, rhythm, timing, body control and expression.
Computing
In Computing we continued to explore Purple Mash and learnt to follow algorithms when being ‘Lego Builders’ and problem solve when being ‘Maze Explorers’.
PSHCE
In PSHCE the children looked at setting their personal goals and how to achieve them. We spoke about what they would like to be when they are older and how achieving goals takes effort and persistence. We spoke about their successes and what they can do to keep improving.
RE
In R.E. we learnt about Judaism. We looked at the holy book (The Torah) and why this is so important to Jewish people. We looked at how The Torah is looked after and cared for as well as the 10 commandments.
