Spring 2
As Artists, how can we make our mark?
Art (focus topic)
This half terms focus topic was art. The children explored the world of lines and textures to create different types of drawings. They learnt how to use wavy, horizontal, vertical, and diagonal lines to express movement, shapes, and patterns. Through hands-on activities, they experimented with these lines to create textured effects in their artwork, helping them to develop their creativity and fine motor skills.
English
The children explored the exciting world of writing through two creative activities. First, they learnt how to write a diary entry from the perspective of Amelia Earhart, imagining her thoughts and feelings during her daring flights. Next, they created their own narrative based on the story The Way Back Home, where they composed their own narrative about an adventurous journey and the challenges faced along the way.
SPAG:
Capital letters, full stops, finger spaces, suffix ‘ed’ and ‘ing’, conjunctions.
Maths
The children dived into a variety of hands-on learning experiences. They explored measurement by comparing length and height, understanding concepts like tall/short and long/short. They also learnt about balance by identifying heavy and light objects. In addition, they investigated volume and capacity, describing containers as full, empty, or nearly full and compared them using ‘< > and =‘. Additionally, they worked with base 10 to build numbers, learning how to make tens and ones up to 50.
Science
The children explored the fascinating world of plants. They learnt about the different parts of a plant, such as roots, stems, leaves, and flowers, to understand how plants grow and change. Through hands-on activities, students observed how plants need water, light, and air to survive, and they even got the chance to plant their own seeds and watch them grow.
R.E
The children learnt about Islam by exploring the importance of prayer in the Muslim faith. They discovered why Muslims pray five times a day as a way to connect with Allah and show devotion. Students also learnt about the mosque, a special place where Muslims gather to pray, and the rituals they follow before prayer, such as performing wudu (washing).
History
The children learnt about two inspiring pioneers in aviation: Amelia Earhart and Bessie Coleman. They explored how Amelia Earhart became the first woman to fly solo across the Atlantic Ocean and how Bessie Coleman overcame many challenges to become the first African American woman to earn a pilot’s license. Through their stories, students gained an understanding of courage, determination, and breaking barriers, inspiring them to dream big and never give up. The children also had a fun packed day during Explorers Day where they came in as their own explorer and learnt about other famous explorers such as Neil Armstrong and the Wright Brothers.
PSHCE
The children learnt about the importance of being healthy and taking care of their bodies. They explored topics like eating nutritious foods, staying active, and getting enough rest to keep their bodies strong and healthy. Additionally, they learnt how to stay safe when crossing the road, understanding key safety rules like looking both ways and using pedestrian crossings.
P.E
The children enjoyed a mix of physical activities that promoted both teamwork and mindfulness. They learnt about sending and receiving through fun ball games, practicing skills like throwing, catching, and passing to improve coordination and teamwork. Alongside this, they explored yoga, learning simple poses to enhance flexibility, balance, and relaxation. Through these activities, students develop both their physical skills and emotional awareness, understanding the importance of cooperation, communication, and self-care.
Computing
Students used Purple Mash to create their own moving storybooks! They learnt how to write a simple story and bring it to life by adding animations and interactive elements. Through this fun activity, students developed their digital skills, creativity, and storytelling abilities as they explored how technology can enhance their work.
