Spring 1 - Week 3

This week in writing we have been planning and drafting our own dream in the style of Roald Dahl’s ‘BFG’ Children have been very imaginative and have come up with some amazing ideas. We look forward to writing our descriptions up in neat and then begin our new topic ‘stroodles’ next week.

In maths this week there has been a high level of challenge where children have started to use the short column multiplication method where children have been using exchanges to work out their final answer.

In Geography we have been identify and learning about the key features of mountains (for the children) can you remember what they are? We have also been focusing on four different types of mountains and learning about how they are formed (Fold Mountain, volcanic mountain, fault- Block Mountain and Dome Mountain).

Have a lovely weekend

Spring 1 - Week 2

The second week has flown by and has been extremely busy.

This week in English we have been continuing with our dreams chapter from the ‘BFG’. We have begun to use our ‘Gobblefunked’ words in our sentences as well as using figurative language such as similes and personification. These will eventually build up to help us write our own dream description in the writing style of the ‘BFG’.

In maths we are now focusing on multiplying and dividing by 10 and 100. To make this easier for ourselves we have used our knowledge of place value and have used manipulatives such as counters and base 10 to support our learning.  We have also noticed a pattern that when multiplying and dividing by 10 or 100 the amount of zeros shows us how many place value columns we need to move our digits.

In Geography we have used maps and Atlases to help us locate the highest peak in each continent as well as plotting the highest peaks in the UK on a map. We have linked this to our prior learning of human and physical geography to decide on whether a mountain is a human or physical geographic feature.

Have a restful weekend.

The Year 4 Team.

Spring 1 - Week 1

Welcome back year 4 we hope you had a restful break and are now ready to start the term. We are so impressed with how well you have settled back in. This term our big question is: What makes the Earth angry? During this topic we will be exploring mountains, earthquakes and volcanos.

In writing we started our new topic the ‘BFG’. Children have read the Dream Chapter and have been exploring different types of dreams we experience sharing the most exciting dream they have ever had. We have also been creating our own ‘Gobblefunked’ words like choceesy, yudicious and smooangy which children will be using in their writing throughout this unit.

In Maths we have been looking at factors and their factor pairs and how we can use them to make multiplication easier for ourselves. At the end of the week we moved on to how we can use our knowledge of place value to multiply by 10 and this will be expanded on next week when we move onto multiplying by 100 and then using the same knowledge for division.

In Geography we are continuing our Journey through Mount Everest which children experienced during their VR workshop last term. This week we watched an exciting video which followed a small groups trek to Mount Everest basecamp and completed a range of activities throughout such as: planning the route; learning what the different prayer flags mean and discovering different items we may find along the way like Yak droppings and heather.

Enjoy your weekend,

The Year 4 team.
