Spring 1
What a jam packed half term it’s been. Here’s what Year 3 got up to this half term.
In English children write their own character description. They looked at the model text of Mr Twit and focused on the key features of a good character description. Children used expanded noun phrases, fronted adverbials as well as apostrophe for possession to write their very own character descriptions. They were lovely to read and they thoroughly enjoyed the unit. Using their Science learning children wrote their very own information text about the plant’s life cycle. They worked on their technical vocabulary, stuck to facts and worked on their subordinating and co-ordinating conjunctions to extend their sentences. It was amazing to read all the knowledge they have retained from their Science learning.
This half term we have completed our topic on Multiplication and division and have started length and perimeter. Children have worked on converting cm to mm and have ordered heights from shortest to tallest. Children enjoyed roaming around the classroom and measuring objects and categorising them by length. We have explored what Perimeter is and will continue this once we return after the half term break.
Science has been incredibly immersive this half term as children have enjoyed extending their knowledge on plants. They created their very own root finders and put them in different conditions to see how it impacted their growth. We were all incredibly amazed by the results even Mrs Mulhull kept popping in to see their progress. They have explored the process of Pollination and were amazed to learn that plants have male and female parts. We also explored water transportation and how the stem is filled with tiny tubes called the Xylem which transports water to the leaves. We set up our very own Science experiments with celery to see if the coloured water would be transported and change the colour of the leaves.
Unfortunately, our highly anticipated trip to RHS Wisley was postponed however we hope to reschedule for next half term so we can revisit our learning on plants. Updates will be sent out once we know more.
In Geography, we looked at the tropical Rainforests. Children were incredibly engaged when learning about these amazing Rainforests and all the unique characteristics they have. We talked about their climate and all the different layers. Children discussed which layer they would like to live in and why. They were therefore incredibly excited to learn that our class assemblies would be based around our learning on the Rainforests. They were keen to share all the things causing danger to these incredible ecosystems such as deforestation. Thank you to everyone who came to support and we hope you thoroughly enjoyed their performances.
Children have thoroughly enjoyed designing their own castles and creating them out of recyclable materials. They focused on the features a good castle should include such as a drawbridge, turrets and a flag to identify who it belongs to. It was amazing to see all the different designs that were created and incredible to see children problem solve when their design maybe didn’t quite go there way. Thank you for all the materials sent in. The children thoroughly enjoyed this unit.
We hope you have a restful half term break and look forward to welcoming you back in Spring 2!
