Autumn 1

Week 1

 

Well done to all the children for settling in so well to Year 5. They were all eager to learn and impress and that was evident in their work. Despite the hot weather, the children continued to work hard and give it their all.

 

In Maths, we have begun our Place Value unit and the children have used their prior knowledge to help them. 

 

In Reading, we are looking at an array of texts to help engage the children.

Year 5 Team

Week 2 

 

Another fantastic week in year 5 has come to a close and I think it's fair to say it's been a busy one. 

In maths we have continued with our place value learning looking at numbers up to one million as well as how to work out one, ten, one hundred, one thousand, ten thousand and one hundred thousand more or less than a number. The children have been superb this week and their maths learning has really impressed us.

In writing we introduced our model text "Max's Voyage" which was loosely based on the popular book "Where the Wild Thigs Are". The children looked at some of the vocabulary and main features of the text and narratives in general to help them build a "writers toolbox" which will aid them in their own writing going forwards. We have also produced a plan for a slightly altered version linked to our Geography learning based around South America about an Amazonian child called Bizmark.

We continued our geography learning by looking at where the 12 individual countries are as well as what their capital cities and flags are. We also had a brief look at the time zones and how they are different from ours here in the UK.

We had a particularly exciting and thought provoking science lesson based around gravity, discovering what it is and looking at its effects. To witness this we all went outside and dropped different objects out of the classroom windows and timed how long it took them to hit the ground. The children made predictions about which would be the quickest and slowest to drop before writing a conclusion about their findings.

Oh and how could we forget the first guitar lesson of the year which was a refreshing change of pace (and size) from the ukuleles we had grown accustom to in year 4.

 

We have been so impressed with the attitude towards work and the behaviour so far so would like to say a huge thank you to you all.

Week 3 

 

It has been yet another jam packed week in year 5 this week with lots of important learning taking place.


In maths this week we continues with our place value learning which began with partitioning numbers to 1,000,000 into the different place value columns and then how to place them on a number line in the correct position. We then finished the week by looking at how we compare and order those numbers in both ascending and descending order.

 

In writing this week we have worked together to come up with a plot for a guided narrative and then built this up into a full piece as practice before writing our own independent journey narratives. We focused on using expanded noun phrases as well as similes in our descriptive passages as well as using speech and adverbials to further our writing.

 

We have also continued our learning about South America in our main topic for the half term. This week we researched some of the differences between the UK and Brazil looking particularly at features such as the amount of land each country has, populations, amount of rainfall per month and average temperatures among others.

 

We also looked at another important force that plays a part in our daily lives in our science this week which is friction. To investigate how friction helps us and how it can be effected by other substances the children were challenged to use pencils as chopsticks to pick up two jelly cubes. One had come straight out of the packet whilst the other had been dipped in oil and they then drew conclusions as to why one was easier to pick up than the other.

 

We would like to say a huge well done to the boys that took part in the football tournament this week, you made the school proud. We would also like to applaud the amount of girls who came to the girls football team trial, it was amazing to see.

Week 4

 

This week in year 5 looked slightly different as it was our termly assessment week. 

 

We would like to take this opportunity to say a huge well done to the children of year 5 for their efforts across the week. Assessments are never the most fun however the amount focus they had across the week and the application of their knowledge was great to see.

A huuuugeee well done to you all.

 

In terms of our weekly learning we have planned our own journey narratives. These were still based around a journey to The Amazon Rainforest in some form but the children were given free reign to develop their own plot lines which they will then turn into their own narrative next week.

 

In Maths we finished our place value unit. We started the week by recapping rounding numbers to the nearest 10, 100 and 1,000. we then progressed this to rounding within 100,000s and millions to. It was good to see the children remembering the rounding rules that 4 or below in a place value column rounds down and 5 and above rounds up.

Week 5

 

Another fantastic week in Year 5 with lots of learning to celebrate. 

 

In maths we have moved onto addition and subtraction. We started the week by looking at how we can use mental math strategies to make some calculations easier for us without having to write them down. We then moved onto our column addition and subtraction with numbers that had more than four digits. Finally to end our maths learning we rounded numbers to estimate answers to calculations.

 

In English this week we focused on finishing our first independent piece of writing. We finished the planning phase on Monday before writing our first draft on Tuesday and Wednesday. We then looked through each others writing on Thursday and edited anything that we thought we could improve. Finally on Friday we wrote up our final versions of our independent writing in neat.

 

In science this week we looked at air resistance and the effect it has on objects. We learnt how we can make vehicles such as cars and aeroplanes more streamlined to decrease the effects of air resistance and increase the speed they can travel at. To investigate this the children made paper aeroplanes in groups and tested them to see which one went the furthest. We then drew conclusions as to why this is the case and the effect it had on the plane.

 

Lastly I would like to say a massive well done to all the girls that took part in the football tournament this week. You played so well and we are so proud of you!
