Summer 2

As performers, can we recite a poem?

English (focus topic)

Poetry
For the first time, the children explored the world of poetry. They looked at common poetic features, such as similes, and discussed how poets use language to create imagery and mood.
They finished the unit by innovating the model text ‘summer time’ to write their own Winter-themed poem, using descriptive language and poetic features to capture the feeling of the season. They then learnt their poem and recited it to each other!

Narrative Writing – The Queen’s Hat:
The children wrote their own version of The Queen’s Hat, focusing on innovating the characters to make the story their own. They explored the use of nouns, verbs, and adjectives to add detail and bring their writing to life.

Maths

Time (O’clock and Half Past):
The children learned to tell the time using o’clock and half past on both digital and analogue clocks. They practised reading and setting times accurately.

Ordinal Numbers:
They were introduced to ordinal numbers (1st, 2nd, 3rd, etc.) and used them in everyday contexts, such as lining up or identifying positions in races and sequences.

Numbers 50–100:
The children extended their understanding of number to 50–100. They practised counting forwards and backwards, reading and writing numbers, and identifying patterns within this range.

Comparing and Partitioning Numbers:
They compared numbers using terms such as greater than, less than, and equal to. They also learned how to partition numbers into tens and ones (e.g. 76 = 70 + 6).

Money (Coins and Notes):
The children explored coins and notes, identifying their values and using them to make different amounts. They also practised adding money and giving change in real-life scenarios.

Science
They revisited and deepened their understanding of the five senses – sight, hearing, touch, taste, and smell – and learned how each sense helps us to understand and explore the world around us. We did sensory walks to bring their learning to life, where they observed, listened, touched, and even smelled their surroundings to identify which sense they were using. We conducted a popcorn experiment using all five senses to explore how popcorn changes as it cooks – noticing how it looked, sounded, smelled, felt, and tasted at different stages. We also completed a scavenger hunt, identifying items that relate to each sense.

Art
The children learned how to create and work with three-dimensional sculptures, using a variety of materials and techniques. They explored how to bend, fold, roll, and join materials to make their artwork stand out and come to life.

History

The children learned all about Queen Elizabeth II and the British Royal Family. They explored key historical events and traditions, developing a deeper understanding of monarchy and national celebrations. The children learned about the life and reign of Queen Elizabeth II, and explored the roles of different members of the Royal Family, past and present.
They discovered what a coronation is and looked in detail at the coronation of Queen Elizabeth II. The children also learned about the current king, King Charles III, and the traditions that continue today.  The children explored how people around the world celebrate royal events, such as the Platinum Jubilee. They looked at different types of celebrations, from street parties to televised ceremonies.
As part of an exciting hands-on experience, the children took part in a coronation workshop, where they created their own souvenirs and even re-enacted a coronation ceremony!

PSHCE
The children learned to name basic body parts and this helped them understand the concept of growth and development. As part of the topic, children brought in their baby photos and talked about how they have changed over time. They had lovely conversations about what is similar or different between them as a baby and how they look now. Through guided discussions and activities, the children reflected on their own personal growth, helping to build confidence, body awareness, and a healthy understanding of change.

R.E

In RE the children learnt all about the importance of looking after their environment. We spoke about ways we could do this, for example, recycling and looking after animals. We also spoke about what makes the world precious and the children were very motivated to speak about their friends and family. We looked at how other parts of the world celebrate nature in the world such as the Blossom Tree festival in Japan.

P.E

In P.E the children focused on target games. They developed their throwing, aiming and catching skills. They also worked on improving their hand-eye co-ordination and how to work well as a team.

We are so proud of the progress the children have made this year and hope you have a lovely summer break!
