Spring 2
What a jam packed half term! Here’s what Year 3 got up to:
This half term our focus topic was Art and ‘Growing Artists’. Children explored the work of famous American artist Georgie O’Keeffe and how she created an innovative style of abstract art by painting magnified paintings of flowers. Year 3 also explored botanical art and completed a work shop with creation station using different mediums to create a botanical inspired art piece. We were incredibly impressed by the children’s creativity and hope they enjoyed showcasing them to you at home.
In Maths Year 3 have completed their topic on fractions. They learnt about ordering fractions from greatest to smallest and also looked at the difference between unit and non-unit fractions. We also looked at fractions on a number line and scale. The end of topic quiz indicated that children enjoyed this topic and have understood the topic well. We have started our new unit on mass and capacity by comparing and adding and subtracting mass. We will continue this topic after the Easter break.
In English children have completed their setting description unit. They looked at figurative language such as Onomatopoeia and personification to make their writing more interesting and enjoyable. We were incredibly impressed by the hard work put in during the Hot Writes and were proud of the amount of work produced. Children included adverbs, prepositions and adjectives to up level their writing and continued work on their punctuation. Our second unit was a biography where we learnt about the difference between fact and opinion and how time adverbials are very important to Biographies. Children completed their hot write on JK Rowling and were amazed to research things about the award winning author.
This half term in History we have been learning about how leisure and entertainment has changed over different periods of time. We looked at how the circumstances of the country also affected certain factors and how the digital era had a boom in technology changing the ways in which families’ book holidays and children spend their leisure time. Year 3 were very interested to learn how cinema has changed over time and were shocked to see the comparison between Mary Poppins old and new.
In Science we have been learning about forces and magnets. Children learnt the difference between contact and non-contact forces. Investigations and observations were carried out to see how much force may be needed to pull a shoe across different surfaces. Newton meters were used to measure the force. Year 3 also took part in a forces and magnets workshop which consolidated their learning. The workshop leader was incredibly impressed by their knowledge and enthusiasm for forces and magnets.
We hope you all have a restful break and happy Easter to all our families celebrating.
