Summer 1

The summer term has been in full swing in Year 3, and here’s what we’ve been up to!

This half term, our focus topic in Science was light. The children learned about different sources of light, including natural and artificial ones. Some were surprised to discover that the moon is not actually a light source — we see it because the sun reflects its light off the moon. This led to some fantastic discussions in the classroom. We also explored how to stay safe in the sun and created some brilliant sun safety posters. As part of our learning, the children carried out an experiment to investigate how shadows change when the light source moves further away. They had great fun experimenting with torches and opaque objects.

In Maths, Year 3 revisited fractions, concentrating on identifying the whole when given unit and non-unit fractions. Although some of the concepts were tricky, the use of manipulatives and hands-on activities helped the children make excellent progress. During the last week of term, we moved on to learning about money — always a favourite topic! We learnt how to convert pence to pound as well as add and subtract money.

In English, we completed two exciting units of work. We began with play scripts, where the children learned about their structure and how stage directions help actors understand how to perform. We focused on using descriptive language, including verbs and adverbs, to convey emotions and actions clearly. It was a joy to read all of the children’s scripts — we definitely have some future playwrights among us! We also worked on persuasive writing. The children wrote their own persuasive letters, using imperative verbs, statements, commands, and emotive language to make their arguments convincing. They wrote letters to parents asking for pets, to Mrs. Mulhall requesting extra break time, and even to teachers proposing an extra day off!

In Geography, we studied the journey of a river and explored the stages of the water cycle. Visitors to our classroom were impressed by how engaged and enthusiastic the children were. They also learned about the natural and human causes of flooding and ways we can protect our country from it. We wrapped up the topic with a lively Kahoot quiz, which was a big hit!

This half term also featured some exciting workshops, including a scooter workshop, a light dome experience, and the Inspirational Mile. The children thoroughly enjoyed these sessions and took away valuable lessons about perseverance and determination. They’ve been truly inspiring.

We hope you all have a restful half term break and we look forward to welcoming everyone back for the final term in Year 3.
