SPRING 1

Our learning question for Spring 1 was:

As Scientists, can we unlock the origins of the natural world?

Writing

We had a lot of fun learning how to write a setting description and a persuasive speech! Writing a setting description taught us how to use vivid imagery and sensory details to bring a scene to life; making readers feel like they are actually there. In our persuasive speech, we learned how to structure arguments, use persuasive language, and appeal to emotions to convince our audience. Both activities helped us improve our creative writing skills while making the process engaging and enjoyable. We now feel more confident in expressing our ideas clearly and effectively!

Reading

We have continued to work on the key skills needed to understand a text with particular focus on summarising and inference.

Our class texts, Evolution’ by Sarah Darwin and ‘Origin of Species’ by Sabina Radeva have supported our Science topic.

Maths

We started January with Ratio where we looked at the language of ratio, compared ratio to fractions and looked at scale drawings. Next, our focus was Algebra; forming expressions, using formulae and substitution. Finally, we moved on to decimals and have been developing our skills with how to add, subtract, multiply and divide them in an efficient way.

Science
During our topic, Evolution and Inheritance, we enjoyed discovering how species adapt to their environments over time. Through an experiment, we used tools like tweezers and chopsticks to pick up different objects, simulating how finches' beaks vary in size to suit different feeding habits. This hands-on activity helped us understand how Evolution works in real life; showing how small adaptations can make a big difference in survival. It was a fun way to explore Darwin's ideas and how traits are passed down through generations!

Geography

In geography, we explored the difference between weather and climate. We learned how to identify lines of latitude, which help define climate zones like tropical, temperate and polar. We compared climates by looking at temperature, precipitation and seasonal patterns. We also studied the weather patterns specific to each climate zone and how to write a weather forecast based on current conditions. Understanding the characteristics of climate zones helps us recognise how geography influences weather and life on Earth.

PE
In our PE sessions, we had a great time exploring different types of dance, like Indian dancing and disco! Indian dancing taught us about rhythm, cultural movements and storytelling through dance; while disco got us moving with fun, energetic steps. We also learned how to play tennis, focusing on improving our skills like serving, rallying and understanding the rules of the game. These activities helped us develop coordination, teamwork and fitness, all while having a blast trying out new things!

Music
In Music, we learned a variety of songs for the Young Voices concert; practicing harmonies, lyrics and choreography. After weeks of preparation, we joined thousands of other children at the concert, where we performed together in an unforgettable experience. The atmosphere was incredible, and singing with so many voices made it feel like one big celebration of music. It was a fun and exciting day, and we had an amazing time sharing the 02 stadium with so many other young singers!

PSHE

In our PSHE "Being Me in My World" topic, we had fun exploring important areas like understanding who we are and how we fit in with others. We learned about respecting similarities and differences, anti-bullying and embracing what makes us unique. We also focused on aspirations, setting goals and understanding the emotions involved in achieving them. Staying safe and healthy was another key area, along with building positive relationships with others. Finally, we discussed how to cope positively with change, helping us feel more confident and prepared for challenges!
