Summer 1
We’ve had another exciting and productive half term in Year 4!
This half term in English, the children have been thoroughly engaged with our class novel, ‘Who Let the Gods Out?’ by Maz Evans. The story has sparked rich discussions and inspired a range of writing tasks.
The children have learned about biographies and created their own to inform an audience. In addition, they have explored poetry, focusing specifically on limericks. They created their own and performed them to the class.
We have continued to strengthen key SPaG (Spelling, Punctuation and Grammar) skills. Our focus areas have included pronouns, possessive apostrophes, relative clauses, subordinate and coordinate conjunctions, fronted adverbials, rhyming words, and homophones. In spelling, we’ve been working hard to master the Year 4 National Curriculum words, helping the children become more confident and accurate in their written work.
In Maths, we started the half term by building on the children’s understanding of decimals. They learned how to make wholes using tenths and hundredths, partition decimals in different ways, and compare, order, and round them to the nearest whole number. The children also learned to recognise halves and quarters as decimals, helping them make important connections between fractions and decimals.
Our Science topic this half term has been Sound, and the children have really enjoyed the hands-on investigations and discoveries. They have learned that sounds are made by vibrations, and that these vibrations travel through different materials to reach our ears. We explored how the pitch of a sound changes depending on the object making it, and how volume is affected by the strength of the vibrations. Children carried out simple experiments to observe how sound gets fainter over distance, helping them understand how sound behaves in the world around them. This topic has encouraged curiosity and scientific thinking, as well as strengthening the children’s ability to ask questions, make observations, and draw conclusions from practical activities.
It’s been a fantastic term filled with creativity, curiosity, and great teamwork. We’re so proud of all the children’s efforts and look forward to another exciting half term ahead!
Best regards,
The Year 4 Team
