Summer Learning

Summer 1

What a fantastic half term it has been in Year 5! The children have shown great enthusiasm, creativity, and resilience across all subjects.

Maths
In maths, we’ve been exploring shape and statistics. The children learned how to measure and calculate angles, identify angles within 2D shapes, and classify shapes based on their properties. We also developed our skills in reading and interpreting data from line graphs, bar charts, and timetables – an important life skill!

English
Our English work has been packed with creativity. We began with a focus on poetry, where the children explored different types of poems and their structures. They experimented with rhyme schemes and poetic techniques such as sensory language, similes, metaphors, personification, onomatopoeia, and alliteration. The highlight was definitely writing and performing their own poems – full of imagination and emotion!

We also explored persuasive writing, creating adverts to persuade others to visit a country of their choice. The children learned to use techniques such as exaggeration, expanded noun phrases, and emotive language to grab attention and stir excitement. Their finished adverts were so convincing, they made us all want to pack our bags!

Science
In science, we have been learning about life cycles, particularly the human life cycle. Pupils explored the stages from birth to old age, including the changes during puberty and the human gestation period. They asked thoughtful questions and demonstrated excellent understanding of how our bodies change as we grow.

Geography
Our geography topic was sustainability. We looked at renewable and non-renewable energy sources, their impact on the environment, and the role of power stations. Pupils also explored the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals and discussed how we can make more sustainable choices, such as reducing food miles and reusing or buying pre-owned clothes.

Music
In music, we began learning to play the guitar. The children have picked it up quickly and it’s been brilliant to see their confidence grow with each session.

Design and Technology (DT)
In DT, we combined creativity and engineering by designing and making our very own pop-up books! The finished products were both fun and imaginative.

Enrichment
One of the term’s most exciting moments was our BMX workshop! The children were incredibly brave and resilient, tackling new tricks and pushing themselves out of their comfort zones with huge smiles.

We also took part in a sponsored mile run, completing laps around the playground to raise money for the school. The PTA organised this fantastic event, and the children showed incredible determination! As for the teachers – let’s just say they had a great time squirting water at the runners to help keep them cool!

Well done to all of Year 5 for a wonderful half term of learning and growth. We hope you have a lovely rest and look forward to seeing you for our last half term of Year 5!
